During the week of April 15 to April 21, 2024, the Service Juridique received and resolved a total of 24 consumer consultations through various communication channels, including email, phone, messenger, telegram, and reddit. Various topics surfaced during these consultations, and a few particular areas of concern emerged as common themes of consumer interest.
A significant number of inquiries, precisely six, pertained to issues of warranty on consumer goods. In most cases, consumers found themselves in disputes with retailers over defective products. They were advised on their rights under EU consumer law, specifically on how to assert their right to a repair, replacement, or refund.
The subject of banking also prompted five consultations. These generally involved concerns about unauthorized transactions and charges. Consumers were guided on initiating contact with their banks to address these issues and were informed about their rights to dispute transactions within stipulated time limits.
Health claims related to food were discussed in four cases. Two of these involved misleading inadmissible health claims, where consumers sought clarity on whether certain advertised health benefits complied with EU regulations. These individuals were informed about the criteria under which health claims are considered valid and were encouraged to report businesses that failed to comply.
Three instances involved the topic of right to repair, specifically concerning electronic devices. Consumers expressed their desire to repair items instead of replacing them, and guidance was provided on their rights to access necessary repair information and spare parts from manufacturers.
Unfortunately, there were three cases in which our counseling did not succeed, as the issues reported were outside the purview of consumer protection. These involved matters like real estate rental disputes and non-EU based purchases, which are not within the scope of a consumer watchdog’s responsibilities.
Overall, our services ensured several consumers were well-informed of their rights and avenues for redress within the EU framework, thereby strengthening consumer protection within our jurisdiction.
This week counseling was provided by WhizzBang Maas-Rhein.
