During the week from 2024-08-12 to 2024-08-18, the Service Juridique provided consultation services to address various consumer issues through different communication channels, including email, telegram, reddit, video call, messenger, and phone. This week, we engaged in a total of 19 consultations, addressing a range of topics relevant to consumer rights and protection.
In five instances, issues related to GDPR were predominant. Consumers sought advice on how to handle potential breaches of their data privacy rights. We provided guidance on identifying relevant data protection authorities and informed them of the necessary steps to lodge a complaint if they believed their data rights had been violated.
Warranties on consumer goods were a concern in seven cases this week. Consumers were advised on understanding warranty terms and the procedures for claiming repairs or replacements under EU consumer law. Detailed explanations were provided on the rights granted by EU directives, ensuring consumers were aware of their entitlements.
We addressed food supplement concerns in three consultations, particularly focusing on the regulations governing labeling and health claims. Consumers were advised to scrutinize labels carefully and understand the limitations of the claims made by manufacturers.
In two instances, consumers reported unfair business practices. We reviewed their circumstances and guided them on compiling evidence to support their claims. Suggestions on filing formal complaints and exploring alternative dispute resolution options were also provided to ensure their grievances were effectively addressed.
E-commerce and distance selling issues were a topic of discussion in four cases. Customers were advised on their rights regarding online purchases, including withdrawal rights and the importance of understanding return policies. Emphasis was placed on the distinction between legitimate sites and fraudulent ones.
One consultation addressed pseudo medicine/health issues unrelated to food, where the consumer was cautioned against relying on non-validated treatments and advised to consult qualified healthcare professionals for any health-related decisions.
Throughout these interactions, we remained focused on empowering consumers with the information needed to protect their rights effectively. On one occasion, the issue brought to us was not within the scope of our consumer protection focus, as it pertained to real estate taxation; thus, no further counsel was provided. It is our aim to ensure that each consumer leaves with a clearer understanding of their rights and the actions they can take to defend them.
This week counseling was provided by WhizzBang.
