During the week from April 7, 2025, to April 13, 2025, the Service Juridique handled a total of 19 consultations regarding various consumer protection issues. These consultations were conducted via different communication channels, including video call, e-mail, and phone. Notably, this week registered no interactions via Mastodon.
Among the predominant topics addressed during this period were unfair practices. Specifically, misleading information or statement was the concern in eight cases, where consumers were guided on how to gather and present evidence to substantiate their claims. Additionally, five consultations involved exerting of pressure as an unfair practice. In these cases, the consumers were advised on their rights and how to formally contest such practices, emphasizing persistence in rejecting unauthorized pressures or threats.
Travelers’ rights, particularly concerning train travel, were discussed in four cases. Consumers were informed about the specific entitlements they have under EU law and were encouraged to file formal complaints with the respective service providers if their rights were compromised. Likewise, pricing transparency formed the crux of three consultations wherein consumers sought clarity on arbitrary pricing methodologies. Our counsel recommended requesting detailed billing information and ensuring compliance with EU pricing guidelines.
Issues related to (unfair) general terms and conditions attracted five consultations. The Service Juridique offered advice to consumers on interpreting terms, focusing on identifying clauses that might contravene standard EU consumer protection laws. In one instance, counseling was unsuccessful as the issue concerned cross-border taxation, which unfortunately falls outside the scope of our operational framework.
Notably, no consultations were documented regarding border controls during leisure time activities such as shopping or vacation, reflecting either a lack of current concerns or effective preemptive measures in place. Consumers were generally encouraged to maintain awareness of EU guidelines and ensure thorough communication with service providers to safeguard their consumer rights.
This week counseling was provided by WhizzBang Viadrina.
