During the week from October 21 to October 27, 2024, the Service Juridique handled a total of 19 consultations related to various consumer protection issues. Communication was facilitated through several channels, including email, messenger, telegram, and video calls. Notably, the use of telegram and messenger proved to be popular among consumers who preferred quick, informal exchanges, while email continued to be the main channel for more detailed inquiries.
Several key topics emerged over the week. The issue of warranty on consumer goods was addressed in five consultations. Consumers were advised to thoroughly review warranty terms and advised on how to assert their rights based on EU consumer warranty laws. In four cases, individuals sought guidance on unfair business practices, particularly those on the blacklisted practices. The assistance provided involved educating consumers on recognizing these practices and advising them on how to seek redress.
Regarding banking issues, three consultations were conducted where consumers expressed concerns over unfair fees and lack of transparency. The counsel provided guidance on how to address these issues with their financial institutions, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and the right to request detailed explanations of any fees imposed.
Three inquiries involved problems regarding failure to provide mandatory information. In these cases, consumers were advised to request the necessary information from the businesses involved and informed about their rights concerning transparency guarantees under EU law.
Additionally, unfair practice in cold calling was the topic of four discussions. Consumers were advised on how to handle unsolicited calls, including strategies for reporting persistent offenders to telecommunications regulators and understanding their rights to privacy.
In one instance, the consultation was unsuccessful as the issue fell outside the purview of consumer protection, specifically involving aspects of real estate taxation that our Service Juridique does not cover. Overall, the consultations were productive, providing necessary advice and empowering consumers with knowledge and resources to tackle their issues effectively.
This week counseling was provided by WhizzBang Viadrina.
