Brussels, June 15, 2024 – WhizzBang, the European network dedicated to consumer and data protection for expatriates, commends the Slovak Republic for enacting Act No. 108/2024 Coll. on Consumer Protection, effective July 1, 2024. This comprehensive legislation modernizes consumer rights, aligning with European Union directives to bolster protections for all consumers, including expatriates residing in Slovakia.
The new Consumer Protection Act introduces several key provisions:
- Enhanced Transparency in Pricing: Retailers are now required to display the lowest price of goods sold in the 30 days preceding a discount, preventing deceptive pricing strategies and ensuring consumers benefit from genuine discounts.
- Extended Withdrawal Period: Consumers have a 30-day period to withdraw from contracts concluded during unsolicited visits or sales events, providing additional time to make informed decisions without undue pressure.
- Regulation of Online Marketplaces: Operators must clearly indicate whether offers come from traders or non-business entities, enhancing transparency and helping consumers make informed choices.
- Combatting Fake Reviews: Traders are obligated to provide information on whether and how they ensure that product reviews originate from genuine consumers, addressing the issue of misleading endorsements.
Expatriates in Slovakia often face challenges due to language barriers and unfamiliarity with local consumer laws. The enhanced transparency and extended protections afforded by this Act are particularly beneficial, ensuring that expatriates are not disadvantaged and can engage confidently in the Slovak marketplace.
“The implementation of this comprehensive Consumer Protection Act is a significant advancement for consumer rights in Slovakia,” stated Slovak Expat Natália Oráviková, board member of WhizzBang Meuse-Rhine. “Expatriates, who may encounter difficulties navigating a new legal landscape, will find these measures particularly supportive. We encourage other EU member states to consider similar enhancements to protect all consumers within the single market.”
