Brussels, March 14, 2024 – WhizzBang, the European network dedicated to consumer and data protection for expatriates, applauds the recent initiatives by Luxembourg’s Directorate for Consumer Protection to enhance consumer rights and ensure a fairer marketplace for all residents, including expatriates.
In March 2024, the Directorate engaged in constructive discussions with the Union Luxembourgeoise des Consommateurs (ULC) to address proposed amendments to the Consumer Code. A significant focus of these discussions was the planned introduction of a collective recourse mechanism in consumer law, enabling consumers to unite in legal actions to seek redress for grievances. This initiative aims to amplify consumer voices and facilitate access to justice.
Additionally, Luxembourg has been actively participating in European efforts to ensure product safety. The European Commission’s annual report on Safety Gate, the EU’s rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products, highlighted that cosmetics topped the list of notified products in 2023. Luxembourg’s involvement in this system underscores its commitment to protecting consumers from hazardous products.
Expatriates in Luxembourg often face challenges in navigating consumer rights due to language barriers and unfamiliarity with local legal frameworks. The introduction of collective recourse mechanisms and active participation in EU-wide safety initiatives provide expatriates with more robust tools to assert their rights and ensure their safety in the marketplace.
“Luxembourg’s proactive approach to enhancing consumer protection reflects a deep commitment to the well-being of all its residents,” stated Natália Oráviková, Chair of WhizzBang Meuse-Rhine. “Expatriates, who may encounter unique challenges in a new legal environment, stand to benefit significantly from these developments. We encourage other EU member states to consider similar measures to strengthen consumer rights across the Union.”
