Brussels, 2024-10-15 – WhizzBang, the leading European network advocating for consumer and data protection for expatriates, acknowledges the Czech Republic’s recent legislative amendment that clarifies the competencies of consumer protection supervisory authorities. This development aims to enhance the enforcement of consumer rights and ensure a more transparent market environment.
In May 2024, the Czech Republic amended Section 24b of the national Consumer Protection Act to explicitly delineate the responsibilities of various supervisory bodies, including the Czech Trade Inspection Authority, Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, Czech National Bank, and Czech Telecommunication Office. This amendment rectifies previous ambiguities, granting these authorities clear competence over administrative offenses within their respective areas of expertise.
“Clarifying the roles of supervisory authorities is a crucial step toward effective consumer protection,” stated Iwona Szczeblewski, Chair of EuroConsum e.V./WhizzBang Viadrina. “This measure enhances the enforcement of consumer rights, benefiting expatriates who rely on transparent and fair market practices across the EU.”
WhizzBang emphasizes that clear regulatory oversight is essential for maintaining consumer trust and ensuring compliance with consumer protection laws. The organization encourages continued efforts to strengthen consumer rights enforcement mechanisms throughout the European Union and demands that other Member States take similar action.
